Holiday Traditions and the Davidson County Annual Holiday Lights Competition

Each family seems to have its own holiday traditions.  One of our traditions occurs on Christmas Eve, when growing up my family always went to a few very close friends’ homes to visit, eat delicious “holiday fare” and get excited for Christmas to finally be here.  My fiancé’s family gets into the holiday spirit by driving around for hours finding the city’s best decorated houses.  For the past few years, we have merged the two traditions, and I have loved doing both!  I never realized how many people go out to look at the lights on Christmas Eve until we had an entourage of cars behind us doing the exact same thing.

We like to design our route based on the residential Regional Winners of the Annual Holiday Lights Competition in Davidson County.  I must say that the anticipation builds while driving to each home, and it’s fun to vote on our favorites and see if we think the county got it right.  Here is this year’s County Wide Winner:

More regional winners can be found here.

My personal favorite is a subdivision called Sunnyside Estates that doesn’t seem to enter the competition or one of the homes would surely win. At the end of the cul-de-sac, about 5 or 6 homes band together and create a spectacular light show.  Below is a picture, but this photo really doesn’t do it justice.  If you live in Nashville and have not been here during the holidays, it is definitely a worthwhile visit!

Sunnyside Estates is one of my personal favorites!

Of course, the best lights might very well be those inside the home.  Here’s the Christmas tree my mom came home with in 2008.  I think it’s our family’s all-time favorite (poor Dad). 😉
